Loyalty Programs for Fruit and Grocery Shops
By Alva Chew · Updated
In short A grocery store loyalty program works best as points earned in proportion to spend, because a weekly shop can be US$8 of fruit or US$120 of everything. Keep the reward rate low and fixed, since a household spends about US$125 a week on food at home and your customers buy often. Staff add points at the till with one scan, and shoppers redeem against a later basket.
What should a grocery store loyalty program reward?
Reward spend, at every size. A fruit and grocery shop sells a single mango to one customer and a full week of food to the next. Points earned in proportion to spend count both with one rule. A loyalty program then gives the neighbourhood regular a reason to walk past the supermarket and come to you.
Grocery also differs from a café in two ways. Customers visit often, and the basket is made of many small items with thin margins. That favours a low, steady reward rate over a large headline offer.
How much do households spend on groceries?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics measures what households spend on food at home, which is food bought from stores. It gives you a sense of the money your customers move through grocery shops in a year.
| Measure (US, per household) | 2024 | 2025 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food at home | US$6,224 | US$6,491 | 4.3% |
| Food away from home | US$3,945 | US$4,142 | 5.0% |
| All food | US$10,169 | US$10,633 | 4.6% |
Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditures 2025, Table 1, released 29 October 2026. Averages across all US consumer units, so they describe the market and not your sales.
Divide US$6,491 by 52 and a household spends about US$125 a week on food at home, or about US$541 a month. That figure is our arithmetic on the BLS average. It is shared across every shop a household uses, so a shop that wins a bigger share of the weekly spend gains more than one that wins an extra single visit.
What is happening to grocery prices?
The US Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service tracks food-at-home prices, meaning grocery store purchases.
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Food-at-home prices, September 2026 vs September 2025 | 1.8% higher |
| Forecast change for food-at-home prices in 2026 | 2.3%, with a forecast interval of 1.9% to 2.7% |

Prices are rising slowly, so shoppers notice what they pay. A points reward is a visible way to give back some of that spend, but it has to come out of your margin, and grocery margins leave little room. That is why the earn rate below starts low.
How do you set points for a grocery basket?
Start from your average basket and how often customers come in. A household that visits twice a week should reach a first reward within a few weeks. Pick a rate you can afford, then test how long the first reward takes.
| Program | Spend to earn | Reward | Back on spend | Customer spending US$30 a visit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 point per US$1, 200 points = US$2 off | US$200 | US$2 | 1% | 7 visits |
| 1 point per US$1, 250 points = US$5 off | US$250 | US$5 | 2% | 9 visits |
| 1 point per US$1, 100 points = US$3 off | US$100 | US$3 | 3% | 4 visits |
Check the percentage against your gross margin before you publish the rule, and keep it fixed once customers know it. Our guide on how to set your points earn rate walks through the arithmetic with your own numbers.
A points-based program suits grocery better than a punch card because baskets vary so much. A US$4 bag of oranges and a US$90 shop should not earn the same. Stamps need extra rules to handle that, and points handle it with one.
Will shoppers actually redeem the points?
Often they will not, so make redemption easy. A study of a retailer’s points programme by Stourm, Bradlow and Fader found that only 3% of purchases had a redemption, although redeeming could cut the basket by nearly 30% on average, and 60% of customers never redeemed in 43 months. That was one international home and hardware retailer with a linear programme, not a grocer, so treat it as a warning about behaviour and not as a forecast for your shop.

Practical steps follow from it. Show the balance on the card, keep the reward small enough to reach quickly, and let staff offer it at the till. Our page on why customers don’t redeem points goes into the reasons.
What happens with weighed produce, returns and specials?
Grocery has edge cases. Decide each one before launch and write it in one line.
- Weighed produce. Points follow the final amount paid, so loose fruit and vegetables earn the same as packaged goods.
- Returns and refunds. Take back the points earned on the refunded amount.
- Weekly specials. Either give points on all spend, or exclude a short named list. Every exclusion is another rule for a customer to learn.
- Paying with points. Decide whether the points-covered part of a basket earns more points. The simplest answer is no.
How do you run it at the counter?
The counter step decides whether staff use the program. If it takes more than a few seconds, it is skipped at busy times, and balances look wrong.
- The customer opens the card on their phone.
- Staff scan the code with a phone already at the till.
- Staff enter the total and the balance updates.
Ask new customers to join once, at the till, with a QR code on the counter. A shopper who is paying already has their phone in their hand.
Can one program cover several grocery shops?
Yes. Many fruit and grocery shops grow by opening a second site or a market stall. With one points balance across outlets, a customer who earns at one site can redeem at another. A program that treats each shop as separate splits your customers. Our guides to loyalty programs across multiple outlets and loyalty software without per-location fees cover both questions.
How do you know it is working?
Track the repeat purchase rate of members against non-members from your own sales data for a few months before you change the rule. Do not rely on figures from other shops or from software vendors, because baskets, margins and visit cycles differ. If you also sell bread or ready food, see how a similar counter works in loyalty programs for bakeries, and for general shop rules see retail shops.
Grocery shop checklist
- Give points in proportion to spend, on the final till amount.
- Start with a low reward rate and check it against your margin.
- Write one-line rules for returns and specials before launch.
- Keep the counter step to one scan.
- Use one balance across every shop.
- Measure member and non-member repeat purchases from your own data.
Gimify is free for one outlet with unlimited members and no time limit, which suits a single fruit and grocery shop. Shoppers join by scanning a QR code and entering their email, the card lives in Google Wallet, and staff add or redeem points on any phone. A second shop moves you to unlimited outlets at US$99 a month with one points balance.
Questions owners ask
What is the best loyalty program for a grocery store?
A points program in which shoppers earn points in proportion to what they spend and redeem them against a later basket. One rule covers a bag of apples and a full trolley, and nobody needs training.
How many points should a grocery shop give per dollar?
Start low, such as 1 point per US$1 and 200 points for US$2 off, which returns 1% of spend. Grocery baskets come with thin margins, so check the rate against your own margin before you publish it.
Should points be earned on weighed fruit and vegetables?
Yes, on the final amount paid. Points follow the till total, so loose produce, packaged goods and deli items all earn under one rule.
Do shoppers need an app?
No. A card that opens from a QR code and sits in Google Wallet works, because the phone is in hand when they pay.
Can a small grocery with two shops use one points balance?
Yes. With one points balance across outlets, a shopper earns at one shop and redeems at the other. Check that your software does not charge per location.
Should I give points on discounted or weekly special items?
That is your margin decision. If you exclude items, keep the list to a few named lines and print it, because every exception is a rule customers have to learn.
