What Is a Loyalty Program? A Plain Definition for Shop Owners
Updated
Definition A loyalty program is a scheme that rewards customers for buying from the same business again. Customers join once, each purchase or visit is recorded, and they earn a reward such as a free item or money off. The common types are stamp cards, points, tiers, paid memberships and cashback.
What does a loyalty program actually do?
A loyalty program gives a customer something back for buying from you again. The customer joins once. Each purchase or visit is recorded against their name. When they have built up enough, they get a reward: a free drink, a discount off the bill, or credit towards their next order.
The point is the repeat visit. A regular who has 80 of the 100 points they need has a reason to pick your café over the one next door on Thursday morning.
What are the main types?
| Type | How the customer earns | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Stamp card | One stamp per visit or per item | Cafés and bubble-tea shops with similar bills each visit |
| Points | Points per dollar spent | Restaurants, bakeries and shops where bills vary a lot |
| Tiers | Status levels unlocked by total spend | Larger chains with a wide spread of spenders |
| Paid membership | A fee up front for ongoing perks | Businesses with very frequent, high-value regulars |
| Cashback or credit | A percentage of spend returned as store credit | Shops that want the reward to feel like money |
Most small businesses start with a stamp card or a points-based loyalty program. The difference is whether you reward the visit or the amount spent.
What does it look like at the counter?
A paper card needs a stamp and a customer who remembers to bring it. A digital program usually works one of two ways. The customer shows a QR code on their phone, or the staff member looks them up by phone number or email. The staff member records the purchase and the balance updates on the customer’s phone.
Speed matters more than features here. If recording a purchase adds 20 seconds per customer, staff will skip it when the queue is six deep, and the program quietly stops working.
How do you know if it is working?
Track three things each month:
- Sign-ups. How many customers joined, out of how many transactions.
- Repeat visits. How often members come back compared with before they joined.
- Redemptions. How many rewards were claimed. A program where nobody redeems is one customers have forgotten.
What does a loyalty program cost?
Paper cards cost little to print but nothing to measure. Software ranges from free for a single outlet to several hundred dollars a month, and fees per member, per location or per message can raise the bill as you grow. Questions owners ask
What is the simplest kind of loyalty program?
A stamp card. The customer gets one stamp per visit or item, and a free item after a set number, such as the 10th coffee free. It is easy to explain but treats a small bill and a large bill the same.
Do loyalty programs work for small businesses?
They work when they are fast to use at the counter and the first reward is within reach. A program staff skip during a rush, or a reward customers cannot reach for months, will not bring people back.
What is the difference between a loyalty program and a discount?
A discount lowers the price for anyone who buys. A loyalty program only rewards customers who come back, so the cost goes to repeat business rather than one-off sales.
Do customers need to download an app to join a loyalty program?
Not always. Many digital programs let customers join by scanning a QR code and keep the card in their phone wallet or browser, with no app to install.
