Hawker Loyalty Card: How a Hawker Stall Can Reward Regulars With Points

By · Updated

In short A hawker loyalty card works best as points earned on the bill, with a rate set so a regular who eats at your stall three times a week reaches a free plate in about three weeks. Customers scan a QR code once and the card sits in Google Wallet, so there is no app and no paper to carry. One free plan covers a single stall.

Does a hawker stall need a loyalty card?

A hawker stall already has regulars. The office worker who orders the same plate at 12:15, the retiree who comes every morning and the family that eats on Sunday are all loyal without a card. A loyalty card does not create them. It rewards what they already do and gives a newer customer a reason to return to your stall instead of the one three doors down.

Your situation differs from a café or restaurant in four ways:

  • The bill is small. A plate is a few dollars, so the reward has to be priced against a low margin per plate.
  • The counter is tiny. You are cooking and serving at the same time, often alone or with one helper.
  • The queue sets the pace. Anything that adds more than a few seconds loses you the next customer.
  • Your customers are a mix. Many carry a smartphone. Some do not, and a few still pay in cash.

This page covers a points card built for that setting. The worked numbers use S$ because the topic is a single market, hawkers in Singapore and Malaysia. Rerun them with your own prices.

How big is the hawker trade, and what does it cost to run a stall?

These are the figures from Singapore’s government that frame the decision.

Sources: Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment written replies by Minister Grace Fu on the number of stalls (8 May 2024), stall rents (7 May 2024), e-payment (5 March 2026) and vacancies (24 February 2026).

Two readings follow. First, with over 14,000 stalls in NEA centres alone, a customer who wants a given dish usually has several stalls to choose from. A reason to come back to yours has value. Second, with median rent in the S$1,600 range, a stall cannot afford a loyalty tool that charges by the month for a single counter. Hawker culture also carries weight beyond Singapore’s borders: UNESCO inscribed it on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2020.

This page has no source for hawker loyalty rates or for how often hawker customers return. We found none from a government or academic source, so every repeat-visit number below is a worked example, not a statistic.

What reward system fits a hawker stall?

Points. A customer who buys a S$4 plate and one who buys a S$7 plate with extra meat are making different purchases, and a stamp card gives them the same credit. A stamp card also needs rules for sizes, add-ons and takeaway orders, and a paper card is one more thing for a customer to lose in a wallet. Points earned on the bill handle all of this with a single rule. Our page on stamp cards versus points sets out the comparison, and the case for points only covers why a simpler rule wins.

A hawker menu is often short. If most of your plates sit in a narrow price band, points behave like a fixed award per plate, and you can print that on the sign.

PlatePricePoints at 10 per S$1
Economy rice, one meat and two vegetablesS$4.0040
Noodles or rice with a mainS$5.0050
Plate with extra meatS$6.5065

These prices are examples, not market data.

How many points should a hawker stall give?

Start with the customer you want more of, usually the regular who eats at your stall several times a week. Then set the reward so that customer reaches a free plate in about three weeks.

A worked example, at 10 points per S$1 with 500 points buying a free plate worth up to S$5:

CustomerSpend a weekPoints a weekWeeks to first reward
Two plates a week at S$5S$101005
Three plates a week at S$5S$15150about 3.3
One plate every weekday at S$5S$252502

A S$5 reward against S$50 of spend gives back 10% at menu price. Your real cost is the ingredients and gas in a plate, which is below the menu price, so check your own cost per plate first. If 10% is too much, raise the reward to 600 points at the same earn rate. It then gives back about 8.3% at menu price, and the three-plates-a-week regular waits four weeks. Our guide on how to set your points earn rate works through other price points.

What does the counter routine look like in the lunch rush?

The lunch queue is the constraint, so the loyalty step must fit inside the time you already spend on an order.

  1. Ask for the QR code when you take the order, not after payment.
  2. Enter the amount on the phone you already keep at the stall.
  3. The customer sees the balance update while you cook.

New members take a little longer once. A sign at the counter with a QR code lets a customer in the queue scan and join while waiting, so you do not stop to sign anyone up. For the full routine see our page on how to launch a loyalty program at the counter.

Will customers download an app for one stall?

No, and you should not ask. A customer who eats at your stall twice a week will not install an app for it. With Gimify the customer scans a QR code and enters an email, and the card appears in Google Wallet with a live balance and a scannable code. Later visits sign in with a one-tap email link. Our page on a loyalty card with no app download explains the reasoning, with the evidence on app installs.

Some customers will not have a smartphone or will not want a card. Keep serving them as you do today. A loyalty card rewards those who join and does not change your price or your menu for anyone else.

How does it work with cash and e-payment?

Points follow the amount on the bill, so it does not matter whether the customer pays by cash, PayNow or another QR payment. You enter the amount, and the customer’s points follow. The card does not connect to your payment method and does not need a new terminal. About two-thirds of stalls now accept e-payment, per the March 2026 reply above, and a points card works the same for the other third.

What if you run two stalls?

Some hawkers run a second stall in another centre, or a stall and a kiosk. If each stall keeps its own balance, a customer who earns 200 points at one cannot spend them at the other. One shared balance fixes that. Points earned at the first stall can be redeemed at the second. Before you open the second stall, read how multi-outlet pricing works, because some software charges for each location. For the Singapore options side by side, see our list of the best loyalty apps in Singapore, and for a related trade, our page on coffee shops and kopitiams.

With Gimify, one hawker stall runs a points card free, with unlimited members and no time limit. Staff add and redeem points on any phone at the counter, with no new hardware. A second stall moves you to the unlimited-outlets plan at US$99 a month in Singapore, or about RM199 in Malaysia, with one balance across both.

Hawker loyalty checklist

  • Pick the regular you want more of and set the reward so that person earns it in about three weeks.
  • Price the reward against your cost per plate, not the menu price.
  • Ask for the QR code when taking the order.
  • Put a QR sign on the counter so queuing customers can join themselves.
  • Keep cash, PayNow and everything else working as before.
  • Check software pricing before you open a second stall.

Questions owners ask

What is the best loyalty card for a hawker stall?

A points card with a rate you can say in one sentence, such as 10 points for every S$1 and a free plate at 500 points. Regulars already understand spending and earning, and a small stall has no room to explain tiers, vouchers or special days.

Do hawker customers need to download an app?

Not with a card that lives in a phone wallet. With Gimify a customer scans a QR code, enters an email and the card is added to Google Wallet. There is no app, form or password.

How many points should a hawker stall give per plate?

Set it so a regular reaches a free plate in about three weeks. At 10 points per S$1, a S$5 plate earns 50 points. With 500 points for a free S$5 plate, a customer eating three plates a week needs about three and a third weeks.

Can a hawker stall run a loyalty program for free?

Yes. Gimify's free plan covers one outlet with unlimited members, a Google Wallet card, QR sign-up, and earning and redeeming. There is no time limit. It is not a trial.

Does a stall with no spare counter space still work with points?

Yes. Staff add points on any phone at the counter, with no new hardware or terminal. Ask for the QR code when you take the order and enter the amount while you cook.

Can one card cover two stalls?

Yes, if the software keeps one points balance across outlets. Gimify's unlimited-outlets plan is US$99 a month, about RM199 in Malaysia, with one balance across every outlet and no per-location fees.
