Frozen Yogurt Loyalty Program: Points on Spend for Pay-by-Weight Shops

By · Updated

In short A frozen yogurt loyalty program works best as points earned on the amount spent, because a self-serve cup priced by weight has a different total every time and points follow that total with no extra rule. USDA data shows US frozen yogurt production peaked at 4,249 thousand gallons in May 2024 and bottomed at 2,354 in January, about 80% higher, so set the reward to be reachable in one warm season. Ask for the QR code before the cup goes on the scale and keep the counter step to one scan.

What makes a frozen yogurt loyalty program different?

A frozen yogurt shop sells a treat that customers build themselves. In many self-serve shops the cup is weighed at the till and priced by weight, so two customers in the same queue can pay very different amounts. Three features of the trade shape the design:

  • The bill varies from cup to cup. A small cup with two flavours and a large cup piled with toppings sit far apart in price.
  • Groups order together. Families and friends often visit as a group, each with their own cup.
  • Visits are discretionary. Nobody needs frozen yogurt, so a reason to choose your shop over the next one has value.

This page covers a program built on points alone. The prices and visit counts below are worked examples you can rerun with your own menu.

How seasonal is frozen yogurt?

We could not find a government series of frozen yogurt shop sales by month, so we used the nearest primary data, which is how much frozen yogurt US manufacturers make each month. It shows the shape of demand, though it measures production and not what shops sell.

Source: USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Dairy Products 2024 Summary, April 2025, table “Ice Cream Production by Product and Month, United States: 2024”, line “Yogurt, total”. The report gives the full-year total as down 5.6% on 2023. The peak month ran about 80% above the lowest month, and the full year is about 4% of regular ice cream’s 885,999 thousand gallons. Both ratios are our own division of published figures.

Two things stand out. Frozen yogurt output swings more across the year than ice cream does. Our page on ice cream shop loyalty shows the regular ice cream peak is about 38% above its trough. The national figure also covers every channel, including supermarkets, so a single shop in a cold climate may see a bigger swing. Check your own monthly takings.

What should you do with a seasonal year?

Design the program around the weeks when your regulars are in front of you.

  • Set the reward for one warm season. If a weekly regular visits for 20 warm weeks, a reward that takes 25 visits never arrives. Aim for about six or seven.
  • Keep one rule all year. Points scale with the bill, so a loaded winter cup earns more than a plain one, with no promotion to explain.
  • Sign people up in the busy months. The warm-weather queue is when most new faces walk in, so ask for the QR code then.
  • Read your quiet months in your own numbers. National data shows a shape, and your takings show your shop.

Why do points suit pay-by-weight pricing?

Points are earned in proportion to the amount spent. At a shop that prices by weight, the amount spent is the number the scale already produces. Staff type it into the phone at the counter and the customer sees the balance update.

A stamp card gives a small cup and a heaped one the same credit. It also raises questions that someone has to answer at the till:

  • Does a child’s cup earn a stamp?
  • Does a bowl shared by two earn one stamp or two?
  • Does a cup weighed at US$14 count the same as one at US$4?
  • Do toppings-only purchases count?

Each rule is one more thing for staff to remember and customers to ask about. Our page on stamp cards versus points sets out the comparison.

How many points should a frozen yogurt shop give?

Start with the customer you want more of, usually the weekly regular or the family that comes every weekend. Assume a price of US$0.60 per ounce, 10 points per US$1, and 500 points buying US$5 off any order:

OrderWeightPricePoints earnedVisits to reach 500 points
Small cup8 ozUS$4.8048about 10.4
Medium cup12 ozUS$7.2072about 6.9
Large cup16 ozUS$9.6096about 5.2
Family of four, four medium cups48 ozUS$28.80288about 1.7

The reward gives back US$5 for every US$50 spent, which is 10% of spend at menu price. Your cost of the reward is lower than its menu value, because it costs you yogurt, toppings, cups and labour and not retail price. Check your cost of goods before you fix the rate. If 10% is too high for your margin, move to 600 points at the same earn rate. The price per ounce here is illustrative and not market data. Our guide on how to set your points earn rate works through other price points.

What happens at the counter during the rush?

Froyo shops see bursts after school, after dinner and on hot weekends. The queue is the constraint, and the loyalty step must not add to it.

  1. Ask for the QR code before the cup goes on the scale.
  2. Staff enter the total on the phone already at the counter.
  3. The customer sees the balance update while paying.

The step costs a few seconds if the customer already has the card in their phone. It costs minutes if the customer must find an app, which is why a loyalty card with no app download matters for someone who is only there for a treat.

How does this differ from an ice cream shop?

Both sell a weather-led treat, but frozen yogurt shops often add self-serve and weight pricing, which makes the bill less predictable. The ice cream shop page covers a scoop-and-sundae menu with fixed prices. A broader menu of cakes and plates is covered in dessert shop loyalty.

Is a loyalty program worth it for a frozen yogurt shop?

It depends on how many customers return. If most are tourists, a program does less. If the same families come back through the warm months, a program rewards what already happens. Count how many customers you recognise by face or cup. If it is a large share, a program is worth trying. Before you pay for software, compare the free options in free loyalty program apps.

With Gimify, a single shop runs a points program free, with unlimited members and no time limit. Customers join from a QR code with an email and the card sits in Google Wallet with a live balance. Staff add or redeem points from any phone at the counter. A second shop moves you to US$99 a month for unlimited outlets, with one balance across all of them.

Frozen yogurt loyalty checklist

  • Pick the customer you want more of, the warm-season regular or the weekend family.
  • Set the earn rate so a regular reaches the reward in about six or seven visits.
  • Price the reward at your cost of goods, not menu price.
  • Make the reward simple, such as an amount off any order.
  • Ask for the QR code before the cup is weighed.
  • Pull your own monthly takings to see how deep your winter dip is.
  • Choose software with one balance across outlets before opening a second shop.

Questions owners ask

What is the best loyalty program for a frozen yogurt shop?

A points program on spend. Many froyo shops charge by weight, so one customer pays US$4 and the next pays US$11. Points earned per dollar give each cup credit in proportion to what was paid, and customers already understand spending and earning.

How many points should a frozen yogurt shop give per dollar?

Choose a rate that keeps the poster numbers round. At 10 points per US$1, a US$7.20 cup earns 72 points. Then set the reward so a weekly regular reaches it in about six to seven visits, and check the reward against your cost of goods and not the menu price.

Does a loyalty program work for a pay-by-weight shop?

Yes, and points suit it better than a stamp card. Staff already read a total from the scale. They enter that amount on the phone and the points follow. There is no rule to write about cup sizes, toppings or shared bowls.

Is frozen yogurt seasonal?

In US production data it is. USDA reports frozen yogurt output of 4,249 thousand gallons in May 2024 against 2,354 in January. That is factory output and not shop sales, so check your own monthly takings for the size of your dip.

Do customers need to download an app to join?

Not with Gimify. A customer scans a QR code and enters an email, then the card is added to Google Wallet. There is no app and no password, which suits a customer who walks in for a treat.

Can one loyalty program cover several froyo shops?

Yes, if the software keeps one points balance across outlets, so a customer can earn at one shop and redeem at another. Check that the price does not rise for each location before you open the next shop.
