Visit Frequency: Formula and How to Track It

By · Updated

Definition Customer visit frequency is the average number of times each customer visits you in a set period. Divide total visits by unique customers, or divide the days in the period by that result to get days between visits. A café with 1,800 visits from 300 customers in a quarter averages 6 visits each, about one visit every 15 days.

What is customer visit frequency?

Customer visit frequency is the average number of times a customer comes to your shop in a chosen period, usually a month or a quarter. A café may see 6 visits per customer a quarter, while a salon may see 1.

You can state it two ways. As a count, it is visits per customer. As a gap, it is the average number of days between one visit and the next. The gap reads more naturally for owners, because it tells you how long a customer can go quiet before something has changed.

How do you calculate visit frequency?

Formula: total visits in the period ÷ unique customers who visited. Days between visits: days in the period ÷ visit frequency.

ItemIllustrative number
Visits this quarter1,800
Unique customers who visited300
Visit frequency1,800 ÷ 300 = 6 visits per customer
Days between visits90 ÷ 6 = 15 days

These numbers are made up to show the arithmetic. Count each customer once in the denominator and every visit in the numerator.

How is it different from purchase frequency?

A visit is someone coming in. Purchase frequency counts orders. If every visitor buys, the two are the same number. If some people come in without ordering, visits run higher than purchases.

Most owners only see visits that ended in a sale, because that is what the till records. In practice you will usually be measuring purchase visits, so say so when you report the figure.

What does visit frequency look like in practice?

The Health & Fitness Association (HFA), the US gym industry body, reports member attendance each year.

US fitness facility membersVisits per member per week
20192.1
2024about 1.5

Source: HFA, “One in four Americans belonged to a gym in 2024”, 7 April 2025, US members, 77 million in 2024. At 1.5 a week, a member visits about 78 times a year (our arithmetic).

HFA also reports that facility membership grew 20% between 2019 and 2024, while attendance per member fell by about 29% (our arithmetic: 1.5 ÷ 2.1). Customer count and visit frequency can move in opposite directions, so track both.

Why does visit frequency matter?

It is an early signal. A customer who used to come every 10 days and now comes every 25 has not left yet, so customer retention rate still counts them. A widening gap shows up in visit frequency first and later in churn.

RFM analysis uses the same idea. It scores customers on recency, frequency and spend, so a falling frequency moves a customer into a group worth contacting. The repeat purchase rate shows how many customers come back at all, while visit frequency shows how often.

How do you raise visit frequency?

Give customers a reason to return that they understand at once. A points-based loyalty program does this with a balance that grows with what they spend and can be redeemed at the counter. Customers already know how spending and earning works, so there are no stamps to collect or tiers to reach.

Test the effect instead of assuming it. Compare members’ days between visits before and after they joined, and report it for members only, since they are likely your keenest customers. How to tell if your loyalty program is working lists the full set of measures.

Questions owners ask

How do I calculate customer visit frequency?

Divide the total visits in a period by the number of unique customers who visited. With 1,800 visits from 300 customers in a quarter, visit frequency is 1,800 / 300 = 6 visits per customer.

What is the difference between visit frequency and purchase frequency?

A visit is someone coming in. A purchase is an order. They match when everyone who walks in buys, and they split when people browse, wait for a friend or use your space without ordering. Most shops can only count visits that ended in a sale.

How do I convert visit frequency into days between visits?

Divide the number of days in the period by visits per customer. Six visits in a 90-day quarter means a customer comes back about every 15 days.

What is a good visit frequency?

It depends on the business. Gym members in the US averaged about 1.5 visits a week in 2024, while few people get a haircut weekly. Compare yourself with your own past quarters, not with another trade.

Can I measure visit frequency without a loyalty program?

Only for orders you can link to the same person, such as a customer who always pays with the same card. A loyalty member account links every purchase to one person, so the count is reliable for members.
