Stamp Card: What It Is and How Points Do the Same Job

By · Updated

Definition A stamp card is a loyalty card that gives the customer one stamp per visit or qualifying item and a reward after a set number, such as a free coffee after nine paid ones. It is easy to explain but rewards a US$4 order and a US$40 order the same. A points program can match the same reward for a single product while also scaling with what the customer spends.

What is a stamp card?

A stamp card is a loyalty card that counts visits or items. Each time the customer buys something that qualifies, they get a stamp, a punch or a sticker. When the card is full, they get a reward, and a new card starts. “Buy nine coffees, get the tenth free” is the classic version.

Stamp cards come on paper or on a phone. A digital stamp card works the same way, except staff scan a code instead of pressing an ink stamp.

What does research say about stamp cards?

Two well-known studies looked at how people behave as a card fills up.

  • At a Columbia University café, members bought coffee about 20% more often as they got close to a free drink. A 12-stamp card with 2 bonus stamps was completed in 12.7 days on average, against 15.6 days for a plain 10-stamp card.
  • At a car wash, a 10-stamp card with 2 stamps already filled was completed 34% of the time, against 19% for a blank 8-stamp card needing the same 8 purchases.

The lesson is about distance to the reward, not about stamps. Customers try harder when the reward feels close and when they feel they have a head start. Any program can use that.

Where does a stamp card fall short?

QuestionStamp cardPoints program
Does a bigger order earn more? No, one stamp each timeYes, points follow spend
Can you give a head start?Pre-filled stampsWelcome bonus points
Works across a varied menu?Only with rules per itemYes, one earn rate
Can the reward be money off?Usually a fixed free itemYes, any amount
Is the balance easy to read?Count the stampsShown in points and dollars

The main gap is fairness across bill sizes. A customer who buys one US$4 drink and a customer who buys a US$40 family order each get one stamp. Owners often patch this with rules such as “one stamp per drink” or “food does not count”, which staff must remember during a rush.

How does a points program do the same job?

A points-based loyalty program can reproduce a stamp card exactly for your main product, then keep going where the stamp card stops.

Take a café whose coffee costs US$5. Give 2 points per US$1, so each coffee earns 10 points. Set a free coffee at 90 points.

OrderSpendPoints earnedCoffees to a free one
One coffeeUS$5109, the same as a stamp card
Coffee and pastryUS$918Fewer than 5 visits
Office order of six coffeesUS$3060Close to a free coffee in one visit

The coffee-only regular sees the familiar deal. The customer who adds a pastry reaches the reward faster, and the office order is rewarded for its size. For the pre-filled effect from the research, add 20 welcome points at sign-up. The earn rate page shows how to set these numbers.

What changes for staff?

On a stamp card, staff decide what counts. With points, staff enter the bill amount and the digital loyalty card updates. There is one rule to remember instead of a list of exceptions.

How Gimify handles this

Gimify is a points program. Points follow the purchase amount at the earn rate you set, and members carry the balance on a Google Wallet card.

Questions owners ask

How does a stamp card work?

The customer gets one stamp, punch or sticker each time they buy a qualifying item or visit. When the card is full, usually after 8 to 10 stamps, they get a reward such as a free drink, and a new card starts.

What is a digital stamp card?

The same idea kept on a phone instead of paper. Staff scan a code to add a stamp, and the card shows how many are left. It removes lost cards, but keeps the one-stamp-per-visit rule.

Can a points program copy a stamp card?

Yes. If a coffee costs US$5 and you give 2 points per US$1, each coffee earns 10 points. Set the free coffee at 90 points and the customer gets the 10th coffee free, just as on a stamp card, while a larger order earns more.

Why do stamp cards with pre-filled stamps work?

Customers feel closer to the reward. In a 2006 study, a 10-stamp card with 2 stamps already filled was completed more often than a blank 8-stamp card needing the same number of purchases. A points program gets the same effect with a welcome bonus.
